Making pots of fiberglass

Fiberglass can be used for many different things such as molding, reinforcement or repair of other materials. In order to make a pot of fiberglass, you need to replicate one that is robust enough to be used as a mold, hard plastic or ceramic. After proper preparation, fiberglass can be placed on the outside of the pot and allowed to harden, making an exact copy of the original. Fiberglass is very easy to work and can be found in pieces in shops local auto shops or marine elements.

Instructions

  1. Cover outside the ceramic pot with clear packing tape, making each belt row overlaps the previous half.
  2. Apply two coats of boat wax on the clear tape using a foam applicator and let it dry. Clean the excess wax with a clean cloth.
  3. Hold a wooden rod up to a table and place the pot upside down at the end of the rod.
  4. Cut three layers of mat fiberglass completely covering the outer surface of the container using a razor. This will take more than one section per layer.
  5. Mixing the fiberglass resin with the catalyst in a small bucket using a mixing stick. Follow the instructions on the packaging for the correct relationship between the catalyst and the resin.
  6. Wet the surface of the pot with the resin using a roller of 4 inches (10 cm). Apply the first layer over the entire surface without overlap and saturate with resin. Eliminates air bubbles under the mat using an air roller. Repeat this process for each mat until all apply to the pot. Let the fiberglass dry until is hard and cold to the touch.
  7. Sand the fiberglass with sandpaper of 200 grain eliminating any lumps or pointed hairs.
  8. Remove the fiberglass mold slowly working freely with a small scraper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use rubber gloves when working with fiberglass to avoid chemical burns.
