A windshield broken usually means it’s time to call in the professionals, but you can save money if you remove the windshield before the technician arrives to install the new one. It is also a useful skill if you like classic car and to find parts for specially curved glass you can take a look at junkyards, where if you find it, you have to remove it and bring it to you at home for the restoration project. The process is very simple, but it will take practice and strength.
Instructions
- Gently lift any border around the screen using a flathead screwdriver. If you plan to reuse the edge, you better start lifting with a screwdriver and pull the rest slowly by hand. Do this on the outside and inside of the glass you’re removing.
- Peel any meeting that may be below the rim. Again, if is in good condition, start lifting it using the screwdriver and pulling the rest by hand. This way you will be able to reuse it.
- Insert the knife between the windshield and the frame of the car starting at the top of the glass in the center. Being careful to hold the blade perpendicular to the glass (exactly 90 degrees), bring the knife toward you to cut through the sealing of the windscreen frame. Repeat this around the glass.
- Push the glass from inside the car. The windshield is resting on tabs molded into the frame so as to push the tabs, insert one of your 2 x 4 inches (5.08 cm x 10.16 cm) between the windshield and the frame to hold it away from the computer.
- Remove the windshield of the car lifting carefully.
Tips & Warnings
- Have someone help you lift the larger pieces, such as the front windshield and rear, as the size and weight of the glass is easier to handle by two people.
- If any of the windshields breaks, be sure to completely remove that section broken off the part. This will prevent unnecessary injuries when removing the windshield.
